AN:  this story is about Mamoru and how he feels about Usagi, sailor moon, and the moon princess.  it takes place during the search for the nijizuishou (rainbow crystals), episode 25 in Japan (episode 21 in the u.s.).

now on with the story . . . enjoy! . . .

Possession

Stray clouds blanketed the already dark skies.  The streets below were quiet.  Cold autumn winds howled in the night, serving as a warning to the bitter cold that awaited anyone who dared to come outside.

Specs of stars peeked through some clouds, gracing the skies with their sparkling light.  The Wind raged on, faster, pushing the clouds across the atmosphere in an attempt to cover the glitter of the night.  What it did not realize was that in its vain attempt to “shut off” the light, it forgot about the brightest light in the sky, the Moon.

The stars distracted the wind so that the Moon could shine through, guiding the night with its luminous presence.  The Moon easily penetrated the clouds, illuminating the night skies, and momentarily soothing the dwellers of Earth from their fears of the unknown. The Moon, with its secrets, called to those who sought it . . . serving as a companion to the lonely, while at the same time, begging for someone to unveil the forgotten memories of the past

The Wind, fearful of the moon’s attraction, retaliated, whispering “silent” screams of intimidation.  The Wind could not defeat the Moon on this night.  The moon’s rays brightened with each failed attempt by the wind to stop it.  It reached a lone figure, who lay sprawled on a bed.  His ebony locks fell over his eyes, tickling his nose slightly. The man’s breath was ragged and his face was etched with worry and concern.  He restlessly tossed and turned, begging like a child . . . begging for answers to the keys to the past, his past.

listen as the wind blows from across the great divide
voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time

Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as his brows furrowed in confusion.  Screaming, he woke up in a cold sweat, seeking comfort in the night, in his solitude.

the night is my companion, and solitude my guide
would I spend forever here and not be satisfied?

Removing his covers, Mamoru slowly made his way to the balcony doors.  Pressing his cheek and palm on the smooth, cold glass, he shivered.  The wind picked up speed.  It sounded like a wounded animal.  Mamoru paid no heed and opened the doors.  A gust of wind caressed his bare chest, making him shiver again.

Still, Mamoru continued, stepping onto the balcony. He looked around the usually busy streets below and noted that no one was outside.  His cobalt eyes then wandered to the sky.  A slight smile tugged at his lips when the moon came into his view.  For whatever reason he always felt some sort of connection to it, yet a part of him felt as though he was betraying the Earth, *his* Earth, by constantly being distracted by it.

Mamoru sighed as he leaned over the railing.  He felt lonelier than ever.  He didn’t know why though. Sure he didn’t have anyone to look after him, but he got used to it.  It was easy to shut people out.  All he had to do was put up a cold façade and not let anyone come close enough to hurt him.  He had let Motoki in, but that was different.  Motoki was very patient and never gave up, a “dangerous” combination. After letting Motoki in, Mamoru swore not to let anyone else in.

Famous last words.

Since Motoki, he had not let one, not two, but three people into his heart.  All three of these people were very important.  One was his “enemy,” the other the super heroine he’s sworn to protect, and the third, his dream princess.

and I would be the one
to hold you down

Mamoru sighed.  He didn’t want to admit it, but he was very attracted to Tsukino Usagi.  She was the cry- baby he somehow managed to run into everyday.  It was as if some invisible force kept drawing him to her, almost like a single thread that connected them to one another.  He knew that he had to stay away from her. She was so full of life, she doesn’t deserve to be around a cold-hearted person like himself.  So, he teased her endlessly.  He knew that sometimes he pushed her too hard, but he couldn’t help it.  If he didn’t tease her, then he’d end up kissing her instead.

kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away

Then there’s the not-so-brave Sailor Moon.  What could he say about her?  Sure she wasn’t the world’s best fighter, nor was she the smartest of all the Senshi, but she made up for all of it with her big heart.  She’s one of the most compassionate and loyal person he had ever met, besides Usagi, of course. Sailor Moon would never leave any of her friends behind.  She would stay with them till the end, even if it meant losing her own life.

Mamoru shuddered at the thought.  Tuxedo Kamen, he, would never let that happen.  He wouldn’t let it happen.  He couldn’t let it happen.

and after, I'd wipe away the tears
just close your eyes dear

Resting his elbows on the railing, Mamoru’s cobalt eyes scanned the horizon.  He didn’t know what he was doing out on such a cold night.  It was insane for him to be out with nothing but his boxers.  He could catch a cold, but somewhere deep inside he knew that it didn’t matter.  He *needed* to be out there.

through this world I've stumbled
so many times betrayed
trying to find an honest word to find
the truth enslaved

He lied.  He knew exactly why he was outside.  It was because of *her*.  She had haunted his dreams for as long as he could remember.  He never remembered his parents, but he would always remember her.

Even now he could hear her sweet voice, her bell-like laughter, her golden tresses . . . He could remember almost everything about her, but he could not remember the most important thing about her . . . her face.

oh you speak to me in riddles
and you speak to me in rhymes
my body aches to breathe your breath
your words keep me alive

She had never allowed him to see it.  Sometimes he would get angry with her and let out a cry of frustration.  She would then leave and not come back for days.  Mentally smacking himself and feeling very guilty, Mamoru would beg for her to return to him. She made him feel safe and secure.

and I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
and after, I'd wipe away the tears
just close your eyes dear

When she came back, he would always apologize.  She would reach out to him and he could feel a silver light surround him.  It was her light trying to comfort him.  She always forgave him, but told him that she couldn’t come to him when he was like *that* . . . *they* wouldn’t let her come.

He never understood who *they* were.  Mamoru always asked, but she never told him.  Well she sort of did. She told him a tale filled with many riddles.  Every time he figured one out, she would tell him another one.  Each time he felt himself getting closer and closer to the truth, and each time the light of the new day prevented him from unlocking the secrets of the night.

into this night I wander
it's morning that I dread
another day of knowing of
the path I fear to tread

Tonight she, his princess, told him something very important.  She told him that to if he wanted to find out about his past, he had to get something for her. She said that *it* would set her free.

oh into the sea of waking dreams
I follow without pride
nothing stands between us here
and I won't be denied

Mamoru searched for the moon.  He noticed that a few clouds had engulfed it and that the sky was brightening without it.  Looking to the other side, he saw that the sun was beginning to rise.

and I would be the one
to hold you down
kiss you so hard
I'll take your breath away
and after, I'd wipe away the tears

Before the moon could completely disappear from view, Mamoru vowed that he would get the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou  (silver emperium crystal) for his princess.  He wouldn’t let anyone or anything stop him.  He would set her free.

just close your eyes...
