Dreaming in Shades
I woke upon a shadowed morn
The earth was painted red
I crept from bed to view the scene
Almost sure that I was dead...
Crisp and clear the wind hollered near
'Till breathing deep I fell
The air was full of poisonous smoke
As if from the depths of hell
If that wasn't bad
Surely this was worse
The red left the world
As though it was cursed...
I walked through a world
Of varying shades
What happened to the colors?
All left were grays...
All was mute
All was bland
The colors I loved
Did not cover this land
Tears stinging my eyes
I lowered my head
The greys were so sad
So full of dread
With a choked sob
I let forth a scream
And found myself
Leaving a dream
So tell me now and tell me true
The purpose of my dream
And tell how the rainbows fell from life
Into the rushing stream.
